In Two Rooms, the publication is approached as a building in which words serve as pointers to elsewhere. Annabelle Binnerts places her site-specific spatial approach to language ‘back’ onto the page.

Two Rooms features two spaces with wall paintings that were made during her residency at De Ateliers specifically for this publication and can only be ‘visited’ by unfolding these two ‘rooms’.
The envelope features as an ‘outside’ to the ‘inside’ of the publication. The result combines architectural elements placed in a grid that’s based on the facade of De Ateliers.

Since moving to the Netherlands, Siwars’ focus on language and multilingualism have been her driving force. In early 2021, she wrote two letters to her mother tongue, Arabic.

The diary-like series in this publication responds to those two letters, documenting Siwars’ evolving relationship with the language since moving to the Netherlands, mainly as a testament to herself and a way of keeping her promise to the language.

“Veri’s time was running out, it was late November and as the sun disappeared so did the color on her wings. As ice moths grow old their cells begin to crumble, becoming fragile enough that the wind can take their wings. The remainder of their lives is spent on the ground looking up.”

Beetle galleries (unique patterns beetles make underneath the bark of trees), can be read as a pictographic language carved in nature. This collection of stories, CODEX, is a speculative transcription and interpretation of beetle galleries found in Portugal and Finland in 2022.

Our social spaces are largely defined by language and linguistic interaction. The language we use and are confronted with can—by being of one kind or the other, through word choice, and by its tone, rhythm, or intensity—coursen or polish, connect or obstruct, create paths or impediments. Language helps us navigate the physical world. It is the substrate on which we tread, whether we realise it or not.

This crucial role that language plays in creating our (social) environment means it is valuable to observe and analyse language in that context. Where does language find its meaning? How does language develop? What are the social consequences of choosing one (form of) language over the other? By executing and exhibiting this multi-faceted analysis we are building a cognition of the complexity behind the words we use and the possibility we have to redraw our boundaries.

This publication is the second chapter of the exhibition Wat ik je nog wilde zeggen (TENT Rotterdam, okt. 2020 - mrt. 2021), executed in paper. It explores the power and poetry of words, shifting meanings, misapprehension and misdirection, finding words and being at a loss for words. This is a study into our current linguistic reality which is explored and dissected as a poetic gesture.

Het is jij of ik is a search for the irreducible aspect of the other. An amazement at the variety of perspectives. With an archive of images and texts taken from (digital) life, artist Marilou Klapwijk shows us that valuable grey.

Het is jij of ik is filled with poetry and photography, found and/or collected by Klapwijk in her environment, or written in response to this. Within this, a monologue takes place, a monologue about the dialogue that is conducted on a daily basis. Online and offline. Between acquaintances or to an anonymous audience. With an astute look at human expressions, Klapwijk shows us her love for the relativistic interruptions in the everyday that leads us through different perspectives and opens our view of the other and of ourselves.

Movements is the result of an attempt to capture the ‘being ongoing’. A state which plays an important role within the work of Lorena van Bunningen, while searching for a composition based on the suspense between the displayed elements and their balance.

The photographs included in this leporello book are fragments from a long process in which Lorena made several compositions with the same elements - a bar, a piece of rubber, and the floor.

This is one of four publications created as part of the index program edition 2018/2019. The index program was an annual program by Meraki Agency in which artists were stimulated by means of conversation to make an analysis of their artistic practice. Then translate this, or a part of it, into an artists’ publication.
