Our social spaces are largely defined by language and linguistic interaction. The language we use and are confronted with can—by being of one kind or the other, through word choice, and by its tone, rhythm, or intensity—coursen or polish, connect or obstruct, create paths or impediments. Language helps us navigate the physical world. It is the substrate on which we tread, whether we realise it or not.

This crucial role that language plays in creating our (social) environment means it is valuable to observe and analyse language in that context. Where does language find its meaning? How does language develop? What are the social consequences of choosing one (form of) language over the other? By executing and exhibiting this multi-faceted analysis we are building a cognition of the complexity behind the words we use and the possibility we have to redraw our boundaries.

Exhibition TENT Rotterdam (NL)

This publication is the second chapter of the exhibition Wat ik je nog wilde zeggen (TENT Rotterdam, okt. 2020 - mrt. 2021), executed in paper. It explores the power and poetry of words, shifting meanings, misapprehension and misdirection, finding words and being at a loss for words. This is a study into our current linguistic reality which is explored and dissected as a poetic gesture.
